"Watchmen...the second greatest comic book movie of all time with amazing visual effects, story and brilliant performances from the cast especially from Jackie Haley and Jeffrey Morgan! Rorschach is the greatest comic book hero ever!!:)" when Batman Begins came out i asked myself this question...is there another film that can be as great standing next to Batman Begins? I have to say that the film that wasn't able to be filmed according to Alan moore, was finally made and let me tell you its without no doubt the greatest comic book movie that set a new standard of comic book movies should be. i will get to all that in a minute.
What is this movie all about? In the early 1980's it was a disturbing time of tensions between the Us and the soviets, as Richard Nixon is enjoying his 5th term as the president of the united state and the superheroes have been forced to retired according to a law banning masks. Sounds like a simple story right? not hardly this story really gets complex when a murder happens at a high rise building killing of the superheroes named the comedian, with a troubling past. Suddenly all alert is happening around the retired superhero community, one superhero begins to ask question about his fellow team members murder that is the take no-bs and super cool Rorschach. trying to find out why was the comedian killed and more importantly who killed him ? Rorschach goes to his fellow members-Dr Manhattan-nude and most powerful member of the group who doesn't have a human emotion in his entire body or soul, Silk Spectre #2-is a bad-ass kung-fu chick who takes over her mother's alter-ego, but is not really happy with being a superhero, Night Owl 2-is a bruce wayne type of character where he is has money, can build machines and gadgets but he feels lost and confused and doesn't know where he belong and Ozymandia is the billionaire business man who turn in his superhero status to make money and build an empire but with a sinster plan behind his making. As Rorschach goes deeper into the comedian murder and past you start to wonder why would they investigate this person crime when the comedian may have got what he deserved, but where will Rorschach investigation lead him and the dangerous consequences that follow that may get him and his retired superhero team killed? Finding the puppet-master is going to be very hard, but the question is should Rorschach stop before something worst happens?
When i saw this movie i never read the comic book i just went into this movie with a open minded. I have to say that this is the second greatest comic book film of all time. I love this movie because this was strictly for the hardcore fans who love comics and love gore, blood and sex. I was very impressed with this movie and what made it so good was the following:
the performances were all oscar worthy--Jackie earle Haley gave a brilliant and chilling performance as Rorschach i love that character because Jackie went into this role and nailed it. Rorschach has one theory in mind and that is justice. I loved how Jackie showed all the emotional problems that Rorschach was having--his mother was a whor*, his life was not filled with love, and more importantly i love how he became the infamous and killer Rorschach because he used to a superhero that never killed till that sick pedophile killed that little girl and gave her body parts to the hungry dogs. I love that scene because Rorschach kills the dogs lol and chops the pedophiles head up with a butcher knife and he just kept chopping till i believe he chop his entire face off. Jackie should of been nominated for this performance because its a performance that really was something that should of been in the best actor or more likely to be in the best supporting actor. I love every minute of this man performance.
The second greatest performance was Jeffrey Dean morgan who played the comedian. this character who was murdered was the most chilling and vicious Son of a B--Tch ever. I believe that he was the opposite of Rorschach because while Rorschach believed in using violence to stop crime by punishing, this maniac used violence because he believe that it was human nature. Comedian's theory was that its a joke. Human beings are very violent people and no more how you try to mask it you cant change what human beings are. That is what The comedians power--to show the sick and crazy ways that human beings act and don't care. you can see this in the comedian actions like his raped silk spectre, he killed a pregnant vietnam lady who was carrying his baby, he disrespect anything that people say to want to save this earth, and more importantly he is just about the sickest character but he was also the most honest character in the whole movie. I just love the complex character that the comedian was he was quick to use his super wit on the problems that were happening in our society as well as his team members especially the scene where Dr M. didnt stop the comedian from killing his babies momma. why because the comedian was right about how DR M. doesnt have any true feeling for the human race and why should he ? as the comedian knew he wasnt going to stop him. No matter what sick and demented things that the comedian did, he was honest enough to say hey that is what human beings are just sick and savage creatures and i just a metaphor for human race's true face when it comes to being savage and violent.
I also loved Dr. Manhattan...this was the most interesting superhero with a flaw because he truly the most powerful and only member who had a super power but the problem was that he didnt have a soul for the human race because he believe that he didnt have to save the human race from being wiped out forever. Billy gave a brilliant performance in this role as the soulless superhero who have to debate with himself about whether he truly was a superhero or just a accident waiting to happen and he is blessed with is a super power but not heart at all.
The other cast members were very good in this movie as well including patrick wilson, and new comers--Malin Akerman & Matthew Goode. They gave brilliant performances as well especially the always brilliant patrick wilson as night owl 2.
This story was very good--its was very fresh and new with its amazing and should of won some kind of oscar for its special effects. I love the visual effects in this movie. Zack really set the bar so high for comic book movies and i loved that he is all about making this film a visual masterpiece. He was the right choice for making the superman movie that goyer and nolan are backing him up on. Zack has done an amazing job with this masterpiece. This was film that was told that it would never be made into film and look what happen...a masterpiece was born. Zack really followed the story in true detail. I know that some of the parts of the story were changed but that is like that in all comic book movies. This movie really shows that even a complex and very gory and sex filled story can really make a world of differences. I thought that batman begins was going to be the only story that would set the bar high now we have number 2 and zack did an amazing and truly wonderful job in being totally loyal to the fans of this book and giving me a violent masterpiece to watch over and over.
I will conclude this with a interesting note which is this--i know that some people didnt like this movie and i have to say that even Alan moore hated the film but i will have to say that this movie is 5 STAR IT SHOULD BE A 500 STAR because this was a brilliant and very complex film and i loved that it does have a interesting complex look at the problems of being a retired superhero and the problems of knowing that a murder mysterious doesnt always have a the truth the way you want to see it. Its great murder mystery comic book story but it has an amazing message and it really does open your eyes to how human kind really is and yes there is plenty of gore, death, nudity and even action that is so amazing that you have to rewind it over and over. So check this movie out...its very long and the director's cut is even longer but i say watch the director's cut its a must better version of the movie. Remember when you are watching this movie keep an open mind about it and realize that there are some intense scenes that are truly not for kids but its more for adults. In this story nothing is what is seems.
that is my review :)
